Physical Geodesy:Precautionary Measures On Deck
What's Physical Geodesy really means? Physical Geodesy is study of a physical properties of the gravity field of the Earth, the geopotential, with a view to their application in geodesy. And what about Precautionary measures? In order for us to maintain safety while working with this physical matters, we must be reliable on what we are doing. We have to be responsible in everything we are going through. We cant do anything if we wont take responsibility to make us safe. According to Edward Coke "Precaution is better than cure." Indeed, this quotation emplies to all workers especially to us future engineers because it is on our hands they're trusting.
We all aspire to be on the top so that people will look up on us. Course that surely bring you on this stage is to be an engineer. And an engineering course has a lot of branches. One of this is Geodetic Engineering which focuses in surveying. Physical geodesy is also a branch of Geodetic Engineering. We plan on what we should do. We think. We work. But there are also instances in the life of an engineer that he will be facing danger. So, first thing that we should do before working is to check first our safety, our locations, etc. to avoid harm.
Why? Because in some point there will be an Unexpected Calamities just like Earthquake hits Bohol last October 15, 2013. A magnitude 7.2 earthquake struck Bohol Island in the Central Philippines region of Visayas. The earthquake's focus was at 12 kilometers depth with its epicenter located at 9.86o latitude and 124.07o longitude, 6 kilometers Southwest of Sagbayan Bohol. An earthquake with energy equivalent to "32 Hiroshima bombs". The NDRRMC has reported 213 fatalities. Another unexpexted calamities is when the landslide in Leyte. A recent World Bank analysis reported that over one-half of the worlds population is now vulnerable to one or more major natural hazards. The municipality of Saint Bernard was one of the worst hit areas and Barangay Guinsaugon, a mountain village was almost completely destroyed.
Another point why we should know precautionary measures is because of The disaster prone areas-the Fault line. An enormous exposed fault line beneath Mount Everest is threatening to trigger another Catalysmic earthquake with the force to move the worlds tallest mountain and bring disaster to Nepal. Scientist have also confirmed that two California fault lines-the Calaveras fault and the Hayward Fault-are connected, meaning earthquakes resulting from ground movement in these zones could be larger and more destructive. Also, the topography of the place. Many of us should be concerned about sea level rise. Erosion is one of the problem-How bad? Today, erosion ia responsible for around $500 million in coastal property loss each year.
We have to be aware also of the zero casualty Rate. We have to know what we should do before, during and after a calamity. Be updated with the latest news. And plan. A municipality should have a good governance and disaster prevention management. Therefore, safety First is Safety Always.
